Shame can occur when we feel judged by others or when we judge ourselves. It can happen when we do something wrong and when we’re entirely innocent of wrongdoing. Whenever we feel bad about ourselves, for whatever reason, there is a touch of shame.
Shame makes us go small, go silent, or go away. Ironically, shame itself is not the problem. The problem is that there is often no one home to work with shame.
Self-compassion is the antidote to shame. In this 3-hour workshop, we’ll take a unique, non-pathological look at shame through the eyes of self-compassion.
After learning about the theory and research on shame, you will have an opportunity to explore the personal and cultural causes of shame in your own life within the context of self-compassion, then to resource yourself in the midst of shame as it arises in the moment.

Who can benefit from this workshop? This workshop is open to anyone interested in learning more about shame and self-compassion. It is an introductory workshop that starts the conversation on shame. It is important to note that it is a resource-building workshop rather than actual psychotherapy. This course is also open to professionals, such as psychotherapists, mindfulness teachers, and educators, who wish to bring fresh insights and skills for working with shame into their work activities.

Our programs are designed to teach participants the tools needed to develop and cultivate a self-compassion practice. It is not a substitute for mental health care, personal therapy or medical treatment.
Personal safety and emotional wellbeing are the foundation of self-compassion training, and you are responsible for your own safety.
Teachers and facilitators are not expected, or able to provide medical and/or psychological care. Course experiences may bring up challenging memories or feelings.
If you have a history with a mental health condition or other concerns you think may impact your ability to take this course, please contact us or your healthcare professional to determine if this course is right for you. Your personal contact information may be used in the event the teacher or facilitator reasonably determines a need to call emergency services on your behalf.
If, in the opinion of the teachers and facilitators, you are not able to participate productively and appropriately in the event you have registered for, you may be asked to leave the workshop, or be removed from it.

Laila Narsi is a licensed psychotherapist since 1997 specializing in complex trauma and disassociation and is a certified EMDR Therapist. Laila started her meditation journey in the Sufi tradition. She is also a Certified Mindful Self-Compassion teacher and a mentor in the Self-Compassion Community. She is one of the co-developers for the full Shame Course along with Dr. Chris Germer and others.
