A three-hour online workshop by Dr. Kristin Neff, October 11th 11-2pm CT, sponsored by CMSC.Self-compassion involves treating ourselves kindly, like we would a good friend we cared about. Rather than continually judging and evaluating ourselves, self-compassion involves generating kindness toward ourselves as imperfect humans, and learning to be present with the inevitable struggles of life with greater strength and balance. It motivates us to make needed changes in our lives not because we’re worthless or inadequate, but because we care about ourselves and want to lessen our suffering.  Research shows that self-compassion is one of the most powerful sources of coping and resilience we have available to us, enhancing both mental and physical health. It is also a skill we can learn and practice. This workshop will provide an introduction to the basic concepts and research on self-compassion through lecture, discussion, and experiential exercises. You will gain practical tools to bring it into your daily life, including how to support yourself in difficult moments; work with distressing emotions; and motivate yourself with kindness rather than criticism. The workshop is relevant for the general public as well as to practicing mental health professionals.
