SUMMARY:Introduction to Fierce Self-Compassion\, with Kristin Neff
DESCRIPTION:When most people think of self-compassion\, they consider the tender\, nurturing aspect of this mindset that allows us to be with our pain and accept ourselves in a supportive way. But self-compassion can be fierce as well as tender. \nFierce self-compassion involves taking action in the world to protect\, provide\, and motivate ourselves to alleviate suffering. It means saying “no” to others who are hurting us – drawing our boundaries firmly. It helps us to take a firm stance against injustice or unfairness without dehumanizing others. \nThis workshop will focus on the fierce aspect of self-compassion through lecture and experiential exercises. By learning to balance fierce and tender self-compassion\, you can begin to speak up\, draw boundaries\, and stand up for yourself with greater confidence.  \nThe workshop is most relevant for those who already have some experience and knowledge of self-compassion. \nCE Credits are available for live attendance at this workshop.  See below for details. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Essentials of Self-Compassion\, with Kristin Neff (through CSMC)
DESCRIPTION:A three-hour online workshop by Dr. Kristin Neff\, October 11th 11-2pm CT\, sponsored by CMSC. \nSelf-compassion involves treating ourselves kindly\, like we would a good friend we cared about. Rather than continually judging and evaluating ourselves\, self-compassion involves generating kindness toward ourselves as imperfect humans\, and learning to be present with the inevitable struggles of life with greater strength and balance. It motivates us to make needed changes in our lives not because we’re worthless or inadequate\, but because we care about ourselves and want to lessen our suffering.   \nResearch shows that self-compassion is one of the most powerful sources of coping and resilience we have available to us\, enhancing both mental and physical health. It is also a skill we can learn and practice. \nThis workshop will provide an introduction to the basic concepts and research on self-compassion through lecture\, discussion\, and experiential exercises. You will gain practical tools to bring it into your daily life\, including how to support yourself in difficult moments; work with distressing emotions; and motivate yourself with kindness rather than criticism.  \nThe workshop is relevant for the general public as well as to practicing mental health professionals.

SUMMARY:Self-Compassion for Caregivers with Kristin Neff
DESCRIPTION:Most of us are quite practiced at being kind to others\, especially in caregiver roles.  Whether we have a high-needs child\, an elderly parent\, an ill partner\, or are a professional caregiver such as a doctor\, nurse\, therapist\, or teacher\, we know to give support and comfort to the people who need us.  But how many of us offer that same level of compassion to ourselves? \nIf our caring just goes one way – outward but not inward – we will eventually become drained and depleted.  Self-compassion is crucial for caregivers because it allows us to resource ourselves so that we can continue our good work in the world. \nThis workshop will present theory and research on the key role that self-compassion plays for caregivers. A variety of practices will be taught that can help you maintain equilibrium in difficult caregiving situations.  You will also explore how to meet your needs in a balanced and fulfilling manner. \nThe workshop is relevant for the general public as well as professional caregivers. \nCE Credits are available for live attendance to this workshop.  See details below. \n

SUMMARY:Connecting with the Source of Compassion Retreat with Caverly Morgan & Kristin Neff (through the Whidbey Institute) (2025)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a profound journey into the heart of compassion.\nGuided by Caverly Morgan and special guest Dr. Kristin Neff\, this five-day experiential retreat is designed to help you access and embody loving Awareness\, where natural wisdom and compassion reside. Please note\, Dr. Kristin Neff will be a special guest\, attending the retreat for only a part of it\, and  Caverly Morgan is the lead facilitator for this retreat. This retreat may not be a good fit for those who want standard self-compassion skills training. For that\, please see our other workshops. \nConnect with your compassionate nature.\nMany of us struggle to offer ourselves compassion because we are identified with a limited\, separate sense of self. This smaller self often feels inadequate\, unworthy\, or lacking the resources and knowledge to truly care for itself. This is the self that suffers. \nOpening our hearts transforms our lives\, granting us greater peace and resilience in the face of emotional challenges. We become happier and more satisfied. But when we cling to the notion of a limited self that must control everything and perfect every practice\, we amplify our suffering. We may even criticize ourselves for not being self-compassionate enough\, creating a vicious cycle of judgment and inadequacy. \nHowever\, when we connect with our larger Self—the aspect of our being that is inherently wise\, loving\, and not separate from the whole—compassion flows effortlessly. It’s from this deep wellspring within our true nature that we can genuinely open our hearts to ourselves and others.\nThis retreat invites you to explore these profound questions: Who is the self in self-compassion? What is the heart that opens to ourselves\, others\, and life itself? Is there an “I” doing anything at all\, or are we simply resting in our true nature? \nWhen we awaken to our true nature\, we don’t bypass the world. We awaken to love it more fully. And self-compassion is the first expression of that love\, starting with the self we thought we were. \nWhat You’ll Learn: \n\nHow to respond to feelings of failure or inadequacy with kindness and care.\nHow to relate to difficult emotions with greater ease.\nHow to take the effort out of self-compassion practice.\nHow to access your true nature\, which is naturally compassionate.\nHow to rest in Being\, the heart of who we are.\n\nWhat You Can Expect:\n\nTeachings and Guided Meditations: Engage in insightful teachings and guided meditations to deepen your understanding and experience of compassion.\nDyads and Group Discussions: Connect with fellow participants through structured dyads and open group discussions\, fostering a supportive community.\nQ&A Sessions: Gain clarity and personal insights during interactive Q&A sessions with Caverly Morgan and Dr. Kristin Neff.\nJournaling: Reflect on your experiences and insights through guided journaling exercises.\nMindful Movement: Engage in daily embodied movement classes with Jess Jaris\nRestorative Time: Explore Whidbey Institute’s scenic trail system\, wander the tranquil labyrinth and gardens\, or simply rest. Rejuvenate your mind\, body\, and spirit.\nNourishing Organic Meals: Enjoy delicious meals crafted by Whidbey Institute’s chef specially prepared for our group.

SUMMARY:Self-Compassion for Work Stress and Burnout\, with Kristin Neff
DESCRIPTION:Our work – both our paid employment and work as unpaid caregivers – is an important source of fulfillment. But work can also involve high levels of stress.  When the stress exceeds our capacity to cope\, we may feel drained\, empty\, irritable\, or useless. We’re also likely to blame ourselves for feeling this way. In other words\, work stress often leads to burnout. \nFortunately\, research shows that self-compassion is a helpful antidote to burnout.  The caring stance of self-compassion helps us to create work-life balance\, be less overwhelmed by stress\, and encourage rather than blame ourselves when things are difficult.  \nThis workshop will use lecture\, discussion\, and experiential exercises to help you learn to be self-compassionate so you can reduce work stress and burnout. Simple tools will be provided to help you cope on the job\, so you can support yourself when you need it most. \nThe workshop is relevant for the general public as well as to practicing mental health professionals. \n CE credits are available\, see below for more information.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid: Online and In-person) Reclaiming Who We Are with Self-Compassion
DESCRIPTION:This 2-day event\, taught by Kristin Neff and Caverly Morgan\, is hybrid (both in-person and online). To register for the online version\, please click here. To register for the in-person version\, click here. \nPlease only register for one of the two formats: On-Land or Online. \nRegistration closes at 9:00am (Pacific Time) on March 21\, 2026. A waiting list will be created if the program fills early. A recording* will be available following the program. Continuing Education credits are available for health care workers (see details at registration). \n_________ \nSelf-compassion helps us let go of identification with the belief that we’re not good enough. With its warm support\, we learn to untangle from our negative thoughts and emotions and embrace our inherent wholeness. \nOur unconscious conditioning—influenced by our family\, genetics\, and culture—often tells us we’re inadequate and need to be different in order to be happy. Compassion helps us remember who we truly are versus who we’ve been conditioned to be. It transforms our contracted and limited view of ourselves\, opening to a larger\, more connected\, and powerful sense of loving presence. \nResearch shows that self-compassion is strongly linked to psychological and physical health\, but our conditioning works against being kind to ourselves. In this program\, researcher Kristin Neff teams up with meditation teacher Caverly Morgan to explore self-compassion from a scientific and contemplative lens\, so that we can respond to difficult moments with greater warmth and perspective. \nLearning Objectives\nAt the end of the program\, you will be better able to: \n\nIdentify the three key components of self-compassion.\nDescribe contemporary research that supports the benefits of self-compassion.\nExplain how family\, cultural and physiological conditioning can inhibit self-compassion.\nUtilize brief practices to increase self-compassion that may be used in a professional setting and in everyday life\nApply compassion practices when needed to regulate difficult emotions.\nExplain mechanisms through which mindful presence supports self-compassion by promoting present-moment awareness and reducing emotional reactivity\, allowing for a more compassionate response to suffering.\nUse contemplative techniques to help reduce identification with a negative self-view.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Fierce Self-Compassion\, with Kristin Neff 4/2026
