SUMMARY:Self-Compassion for Shame\, with Chris Germer (April 2026)
DESCRIPTION:Shame can occur when we feel judged by others or when we judge ourselves. It can happen when we do something wrong and when we’re entirely innocent of wrongdoing. Whenever we feel bad about ourselves\, for whatever reason\, there is a touch of shame. \nShame makes us go small\, go silent\, or go away. Ironically\, shame itself is not the problem. The problem is that there is often no one home to work with shame. \nSelf-compassion is the antidote to shame. In this 3-hour workshop\, we’ll take a unique\, non-pathological look at shame through the eyes of self-compassion. \nAfter learning about the theory and research on shame\, you will have an opportunity to explore the personal and cultural causes of shame in your own life within the context of self-compassion\, then to resource yourself in the midst of shame as it arises in the moment. \nAt the completion of this activity\, participants will: \n\nExplain the theory and research on shame and self-compassion.\nDescribe how self-compassion is an antidote to shame – the 3 paradoxes of shame.\nIdentify individual childhood and cultural disconnections that lead to shame.\nApply new self-compassion practices to relieve the burden of shame in daily life.\n\n  \nWho can benefit from this workshop? This workshop is open to anyone interested in learning more about shame and self-compassion. It is an introductory workshop that starts the conversation on shame. It is important to note that it is a resource-building workshop rather than actual psychotherapy. This course is also open to professionals\, such as psychotherapists\, mindfulness teachers\, and educators\, who wish to bring fresh insights and skills for working with shame into their work activities. \nCE credits are available; see below for more information.

DESCRIPTION:Most of us are quite practiced at being kind to others\, especially in caregiver roles.  Whether we have a high-needs child\, an elderly parent\, an ill partner\, or are a professional caregiver such as a doctor\, nurse\, therapist\, or teacher\, we know to give support and comfort to the people who need us.  But how many of us offer that same level of compassion to ourselves? \nIf our caring just goes one way – outward but not inward – we will eventually become drained and depleted.  Self-compassion is crucial for caregivers because it allows us to resource ourselves so that we can continue our good work in the world. \nThis workshop will present theory and research on the key role that self-compassion plays for caregivers. A variety of practices will be taught that can help you maintain equilibrium in difficult caregiving situations.  You will also explore how to meet your needs in a balanced and fulfilling manner. \nThe workshop is relevant for the general public as well as professional caregivers. \nCE Credits are available for live attendance to this workshop.  See details below. \n

DESCRIPTION:Lorraine M. Hobbs\, M.A.\, is the Director of Family Programs at the UCSD Center for Mindfulness and a licensed family therapist with extensive experience leading adolescent treatment programs. A certified teacher in MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction)\, MSC (Mindful Self-Compassion)\, and CCARE (Compassion Cultivation\, Altruism\, Research & Education)\, Lorraine develops and delivers mindfulness- and compassion-based interventions through UCSD’s Department of Integrative Medicine as well as community hospitals in Indiana and Ohio. She has created curricula for multiple age groups\, including her pioneering Mindful & Compassionate Parenting program\, and is the co-author of Making Friends with Yourself: A Mindful Self-Compassion Program for Teens & Young Adults. She is also creator of a self-compassion training and curriculum for educators and an AI chatbot for children. \nJoin Kristin for conversation with Lorraine as they explore how self-compassion can help children and teens develop emotional well-being.
