This talk will present theory and research on self-compassion, which a burgeoning empirical literature has shown to be powerfully associated with psychological wellbeing. It will distinguish self-compassion from self-esteem, and discuss research indicating that self-compassion is a more powerful and effective motivational tool than self-criticism.

We spend most of our time living in our heads.
It’s natural to think it’s our best — or only — source of information. But as a result, we miss out on vast amounts of wisdom, intuition, creativity, and brilliance — all accessible from our bodies. Most of us never learned how to read the body’s subtle signs. We weren’t taught how to slow down and listen to what our bodies are telling us. So we shut down, tense up, and stress out.
It’s time to change all that. Our well-being depends on it! Let’s learn the language of our bodies and train ourselves to recognize and pay attention to the cues and messages they are always sending. Kristin Neff will speak along with Chris Germer at Peking University, China’s top university, the evening before conducting a 5-day Mindful Self-Compassion intensive workshop. The talk will introduce the concept of self-compassion and describe the Mindful Self-Compassion program. It will describe research on the benefits of self-compassion and teach a few brief self-compassion practices. Both, the workshop and the lecture will be conducted in English and translated into Mandarin Chinese. So, both English and Chinese speaking audience are warmly welcome.

Research suggests that self-compassion is one of the most powerful sources of coping and resilience we have available to us. In times of struggle, self-compassion involves treating ourselves with the same care and concern we would normally show to a good friend – so that we are an inner ally rather than an inner enemy. It involves generating kindness toward ourselves as imperfect humans and learning to be present with the inevitable challenges of life with greater ease. It motivates us to make needed changes in our lives not because we’re worthless or inadequate, but because we care about ourselves and want to lessen our suffering. For years high self-esteem was seen to be the ultimate marker of psychological health. Although it’s problematic to judge yourself negatively, there are also problems with trying to judge yourself positively – narcissism, bullying, and unstable self-worth to name just a few. Self-compassion doesn’t involve judging yourself at all, it simply means relating to our imperfect selves with the same kindness, understanding and support we’d show to a good friend.
