For years high self-esteem was seen to be the ultimate marker of psychological health. Although it’s problematic to judge yourself negatively, there are also problems with trying to judge yourself positively – narcissism, bullying, and unstable self-worth to name just a few.  Self-compassion doesn’t involve judging yourself at all, it simply means relating to our imperfect selves with the same kindness, understanding and support we’d show to a good friend. Research supports that self-compassion is a healthier and more sustainable way to experience good feelings toward ourselves than self-esteem.
